AbstractMorton’s complementary relationships conceptual model was used to estimate the monthly averages of potential and regional evapotranspiration rates at Presidente Prudente, São Paulo. The model performance was verified in comparison to Penman’s estimates in the period 1976-97. Regional evapotranspiration rates, ranging from 4.3 mm/day in summer to 0.5 mm/day in winter, 40% of potentials, were obtained. The wet environment evaporation rates defined by Morton were close to the ones estimated by Penman’s method. Morton’s model provided more realistic and consistent potential and regional evapotranspiration rates, obtained from their effects on the routine climatological observations, used to calculate potential evapotranspiration.
